CONCORD - Campolindo High School cross country star Chris Vizcaino ran 14 miles Tuesday, the day before the Diablo Foothill Athletic League championships.
Was he tired Wednesday?
Apparently not.
The senior led from the beginning of the 3-mile boys race at Newhall Park and won by 16 seconds with a time of 15 minutes, 54.9 seconds to defend his individual league title and lead the Cougars to the team championship and a tie for the overall crown.
"In previous weeks I've been doing 90-mile weeks, trying to get my fitness up," said Vizcaino, who missed a chunk of the season with a hip injury. "I'm going to be cutting back (on mileage) drastically coming up."
Vizcaino, who did 7-mile runs in the morning and evening Tuesday, held approximately a 70-yard lead 11/4 miles into Wednesday's race, and finished with approximately a 75-yard lead.
"I felt really good the first mile, mile and a half. I tried to tempo the last two miles," Vizcaino said.
Campolindo, which had a score of 50 points, tied for the overall DFAL boys team title with College Park (62) and Acalanes (80). The overall league title is decided by a points system involving the dual-meet season and the championship meet.
College Park's Nicole Pennes also ran a superb race. The senior made a move on a long decline after the one-mile mark, held approximately a five-yard lead at two miles and eventually won the 3-mile girls race by 16 seconds with a time of 17:59.9. She led the Falcons, who won the girls meet championship with an impressive score of 35. They also won the overall DFAL title.
"I started to make my move on the downhill, to take advantage of the momentum," Pennes said. "I'm feeling really good this year. I'm feeling comfortable with my running form."
Campolindo had a two-four finish in the girls race with Sparky Murillo (18:16.4) and Laurie Finnegan (18:27.8). Miramonte freshman Elaine Tanski was third (18:24.6).
In the boys race, Acalanes junior Joey Thomas was second (16:11.4), followed by Alhambra's Matt LoForte (16:13.2) and Campolindo's Tom Akita (16:14.6).
